ART

Studying art and design explores pupils’ imaginative, creative, intellectual and intuitive powers.

Through research and analysis, pupils learn about the visual world of the past and present, and develop an understanding of the ideas and meanings in the work of artists, craftspeople, and designers across cultural boundaries. We use the museums and galleries which surround us as extensions of our classrooms and studios, enabling pupils to study a variety of original artworks.

As well as having the opportunity to work from a life model and improve core drawing skills, pupils learn to use a range of materials and processes skilfully in order to develop and communicate their ideas. This includes the use of contemporary technology where appropriate. Drawing and painting skills are the foundation of the subject, but all pupils are encouraged to develop their own interests and directions as their work progresses.
