Last night was the inaugural meeting of Between the Lines: our KPS book club for parents and staff!

Miss Jones introduced this novel idea due to her love of literature and desire to discuss novels with as many people in the community as possible.

"Reading gives us someplace to go when we have to stay where we are."

As such the KPS Book Club – Between the Lines- was formed! The club will run on Thursday evenings at 6pm, twice per half term.

The first text chosen for this gathering of literary lovers was Bernardine Evaristo's Girl, Woman, Other.

The English department wanted to start by discussing something more modern – dystopian novels are so 1984!

Girl, Woman, Other is the eighth novel written by Bernardine Evaristo, published in 2019 by Hamish Hamilton. It follows the lives of 12 characters in the United Kingdom over the course of several decades, with much of the book set in London.

“… ageing is nothing to be ashamed of especially when the entire human race is in it together”

Topics discussed during the club included credible relationships between characters, the role of 'entitlement' and themes of betrayal. It was wonderful to see so many parents take part in this fantastic opportunity for connecting as a community of book lovers, critical thinkers and members of the KPS network.

Between the Lines will next be looking at Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, on the last Thursday before the February half term.

It’s not too late to sign up and join in the fun- email Miss Jones (s.jones@kps.co.uk) or our other English department teachers.
