Covid-19 has had a significant impact on the Arts and theatre industry in the UK, and with the increasing R-rate and restrictions placed upon the country, the industry is once again severely restricted.
However, this won’t stop us here at KPS!
On Tuesday and Wednesday of this week, we invited Ed Harris into KPS- virtually- to conduct several remote radio drama workshops for students in Years 7-11. A brilliant opportunity to demonstrate how technology has played an active and positive role in our teaching and learning.
Ed is an award-winning playwright, currently commissioned at the National Theatre. He has written a series of critically-acclaimed radio plays, leading to a hat-trick of award successes: a Writers’ Guild Award in 2012, Sony Gold Award a BBC Audio Drama Award in 2014. Interestingly, he wrote the libretto for A Shoe Full of Stars (Opera Schmopera) which won the RESEO award for the Best Opera at the YAM Awards 2018. His hit Radio Drama Dot is currently on its fifth series on BBC 4 including Christmas Specials.
With a raft of awards such as these, we were delighted that Ed could take part in this initiative with our Drama students.
During these workshops, students learnt about the foundations of creating and performing a radio drama. Immense fun was had exploring the role of a foley artist and devising mini radio plays in their groups.
Students will now have the opportunity to write their own Christmas themed radio play, using the skills and techniques built on through Ed's workshops. Students can submit a short scene, a short recording or a synopsis of their radio drama and the winner will be selected, developed and produced into the KPS Christmas Production.
