Paul Motion

Teacher of Mathematics UK and China

E:

I was brought up on a farm in rural New Zealand. However Mathematics, not farming was my pathway, which I studied at Massey University in my country of birth. Following teacher training in Auckland, I taught in a variety of schools: state, co-ed, boys', distance, and independent, gaining experience as a Head of Sixth Form, Head of Department, a National Mathematics Adviser and as a writer of mathematics programmes for the national radio.

I have coached many sports: basketball, rugby, volleyball, athletics, swimming; but my real interest is rowing. Following national rowing coaching success in NZ, I moved to the UK and to St Paul's School to teach and coach by the Thames for the next 25 years. At St Paul's I became Deputy Head of Mathematics before entering senior management as an Undermaster. My enthusiasm niche is mathematics competitions: I have coached teams to many SE England and national titles. Establishing and teaching a Gifted and Talented programme in mathematics for state students across West London from 2008 still emotes pleasure.

My main interest outside of teaching has always been art, particularly painting: looking, not doing.
