Ahead of World Book Day on 04 March, our English department led this morning's assembly with the launch of numerous literary activities and competitions taking place over the next few weeks- all to celebrate our love of reading at KPS!

Today our English teachers shared some of their book recommendations as well as reasons why they love to read…

Some of our English Ambassador students shared extracts during today's assembly with the school community from their favourite books- Lola (Year 7) read from Agatha Christie's 'Death on the Nile', Danial (Year 9) from 'Factfulness' and Giulia (Year 8) from 'A Separate Peace'.

Kate, one of our English Ambassadors, invited us all to join a special World Book Day Reading Club session this afternoon, where we'll be reading 'Miss Brill' by Katherine Mansfield.

World Book Day Dress Up Competition

Miss Wallace reminded us all that Monday 08 March is the deadline for students- and staff- to send in photos of them dressed up as their favourite literary characters- we can’t wait to share these with our KPS community. We had some fantastic entries to last year's competition, so the bar has been set very high!

Get inspired and dress up as your favourite literary hero as part of our Literary-Themed Costume Competition for World Book Day!

Creative Writing Competition 2021

Miss Jones launched this year' coveted Creative Writing Competition, with the school trophy up for grabs.
This year's theme is Dystopia, chosen by our English Ambassadors, and the challenge is open for students from all year groups to enter.

Deadline: Friday 19 March

KPS Readathon

Chosen from Penguin's '100 must-read classic books', Miss Gammon has set KPS a challenge. On the English Firefly competition page, students will find 5 books separated by year group. These books broke boundaries and challenged conceptions, from iconic bestsellers to lesser- known gems. The English department challeges students sto read all 5 books from their year group by the end of this school year- each book read will be worth 2 house points, and a Headmaster's certificate will be awarded if all 5 books are completed!

Design a Bookmark

Miss Jardim from the Art department has invited students to design a bookmark based on any and all things literature.

Criteria for bookmark entries:

  • The deign has to reflect the book it represents, e.g. glasses from Harry Potter, a character like the Lorax
  • They have to be handmade
  • All and any materials can be used- paper, card, felt, thread…

Deadline: Thursday 11 March

There's so much for our students to get involved with this term to celebrate World Book Day, as well as our love of reading and literature at KPS!
