As part of the cross-curricular programme of our school, the History and Classics department have organized a visit to UCL. Our students met renowned Homerist Dr Makrinos who gave them a tour of UCL Classics Department. After the tour the students attended a seminar on Homer, where they had the opportunity to discuss major themes of the Iliad and the Odyssey, the language of the epics and their importance as the foundation of ancient literary tradition and heroic ideals. Most importantly, the discussion evolved around the reasons the epics resonate with modern audiences and are constantly revisited in different ways. The students were challenged to explore the ways in which the themes of the Iliad and the Odyssey have influenced modern literature, television and film.
